Speed humps 'encourage bad driving'
Fri, 30 Dec 2005
Residents in Owlsmoor in Berkshire are calling for a number of speed humps in the area to be removed, claiming that they encourage bad driving amongst youngsters and fail to stop speeding traffic.
Neighbours in the area also said that the humps delay emergency vehicles trying to reach accidents in a hurry.
Adrian Hungate, one of Owlsmoor's residents, told a local Bracknell newspaper that the humps failed to slow down 'rat-running' motorists.
"Speed humps are not a solution. They just encourage young drivers to take them as a challenge," he said.
"I have yet to see an incident where they have fulfilled their function of slowing traffic down."
Sandhurst councillor, Peter North, said that the council would be looking into the matter, including alternative speeding preventative solutions for the area.
He added that the police would also be clamping down on unlicensed and uninsured vehicles traveling in the region, highlighting the importance of young driver car insurance for those newly behind the wheel.
