Young drivers get BAR chance

Wed, 21 Sep 2005

BAR Honda is taking out driver’s insurance – by signing up the best young talent around.

Already this year they have signed up South African Alan van der Merwe (British F3 champion in 2003) and Brazilian Danilo Dirani (winner of two races this year in British F3) as well as British drivers Adam Carroll and James Rossiter on driver development deals.

Aside from the deals, tomorrow’s stars have been involved in testing the team's car.

And now US Indy Racing League champion, Brazilian Tony Kanaan, is to get his first Formula One chance.

Next week Kanaan is set to join the team in Spain for the final test of the season on September 29.

Kanaan drives for the Honda-powered Andretti Green Racing team in America. Honda owns 45 per cent of BAR and the team's sporting director is Kanaan's compatriot Gil de Ferran.

"I feel honoured to have this chance," said Kanaan. "My relationship with Honda is quite long-standing and having this chance means a lot to me.

“Honda is and will always be part of my life. We did a great job together last year and this is recognition of the really hard work that went into that.”
