Young drivers surprise critics

Fri, 21 Oct 2005

Young Men between the ages of 18 and 25 are the most safety conscious and environmentally aware when it comes to choosing a car, according to research from Black Horse Motor Finance.

The age group most allied with dangerous driving and high car insurance premiums have been revealed as the most likely to buy cars with the highest safety and emissions ratings.

Based on a survey of 70,000 motorists, cars with the highest safety rating account for 93 per cent of new car sales to men in the 18-25 age group, contrasting greatly with 22 per cent of men aged over 66 years of age.

Young men also surprised critics by choosing more environmentally friendlier cars than those in other age groups. Almost 38 per cent of cars purchased by 18-25 year old males achieved the highest standard of emissions testing.

Phil Stones, managing director of Black Horse Motor Finance, said: "Our data challenges the preconceptions people have over young male drivers, showing them to be aware of the importance of car safety and caring for the environment."

Mr Stone pointed out however that a car tax saving may have influenced young drivers in choosing an environmentally cleaner car.

"Young men may simply have been quicker than other motorists to grasp the financial implications," he said.
