Young drivers experience anxiety

Fri, 25 Nov 2005

An estimated ten million motorists in the UK are anxious about driving, many of them newly qualified young drivers, research by a major insurer has found.

Driving Anxiety Disorder causes motorists to avoid motorways, busy urban networks and bad weather conditions.

Both young and elderly drivers suffer most badly from the disorder, it was found, while professional male drivers are believed to be the least likely to feel anxiety on the roads.

Anxiety can often lead drivers to make mistakes, it is believed, drive too slowly or speed up out of panic, all of which can make the experience of driving even more stressful.

This week (November 21st-26th), National Anxiety Disorders Awareness Week has aimed to reassure drivers that advice and support can be offered to help combat the fear of driving under stressful conditions.

Young drivers will also feel more secure knowing that they are covered by fully comprehensive, young driver's car insurance.
