Young drivers targeted over safety
Tue, 04 Jul 2006
Young drivers make up a high proportion of the casualties on British roads, according to the Highways Agency, a factor that pushes up the price of young driver car insurance.
In order to combat this trend, the agency has now released leaflets aimed at young drivers in order to try to reduce the number of collisions resulting in a fatality or serious injury, which currently stands at 4,223 a year.
It is hoped that this figure can be cut by a third before 2010 if young drivers heed safety advice.
Tips include remembering that as a young driver, your road experience is still developing, and reducing speed and increasing awareness so that potential hazards can be recognised and reacted to in plenty of time.
Commenting on the initiative, the Highways Agency chief highway engineer Ginny Clarke said: "Research shows that poor driver behaviour is a factor in many road accidents and everyone who uses our roads has a responsibility to themselves, their passengers and other road users."
