Young motorists 'not fully equipped with driving skills'

Thu, 26 Jan 2006

An advanced motoring company has claimed that young drivers are not fully equipped with the skills and attitudes needed to drive on today's roads.

DIAmond Advanced Motorists says that the current statistic of two road deaths per day of those between the ages of 17 and 25 indicates that such drivers are not wholly aware of the risks that an irresponsible attitude towards driving can create.

Around one in five drivers are involved in a car crash during their first year of driving; resulting in DIAmond Advanced Motorists urging young people to evolve their driving skills by taking an advanced motorist test.

This can not only reduce the risks of having an accident by making drivers more aware on the roads but in addition can also lower the costs of young driver car insurance.

"If we had 14 young people wiped out in a mini bus each week the government would come under attack from all directions," said DIAmond Advanced Motorists' general manager Eddie Barnaville.

"Something more needs to be done."

The test covers aspects of driving not dealt with by regular driving tests, such as town driving, complicated junctions, adverse weather conditions and night driving and motorways.
